My name is Jackie Cooper, I am 46 years old, 5’1.5″ tall, and currently weigh 155 lbs. At my heaviest, I was 435 lbs. I have been working on my weight and health actively for the last four years. I started working with a personal trainer in June of 2009, but in the fall I left my old gym. At that time, I had some difficult things to deal with; life threw me a few curves. I struggled through, but put on weight as I returned to old coping strategies. I gained over twenty pounds in just a few months. This was the first time in four years that I slid back to such a great extent. I was not happy with myself. So in December I looked for somewhere to begin again, and had my first personal training session here at CanPro Athletics with Al Parada on January 30, 2011. Before we started, I told him that although I had previously trained three times a week, I was tempted to drop it to twice a week. I have a long drive to Red Deer, and found it was wearing me down. The problem was that I didn’t want to shortchange myself – I still wanted to make progress towards my goals. Rather than try to talk me into paying for more sessions, Al immediately offered to build me a third-day training routine for me to do at home, based on my ability and the equipment I already owned. This impressed me greatly – here was a businessman who put my needs ahead of making money – WOW! Training here was similar to what I’d done before, but some things were a little different. Not only does Al insist that I warm up before each session, but also that I stretch afterwards. Once he learned about the significant pain I had in my low back and hips, he showed me some stretches that would help. Initially he would wait at the end of each workout to see me begin – now he knows I’ll do them! In fact, it made such a difference that now I do those stretches every night at home. Since we began, I’ve made major progress in some areas of my health that had seemed to be stalled. Training with Al has been wonderful! I am stronger than I was, I have lost almost all of the weight I put on recently, and will soon be dropping even lower than ever before.I don’t want you to think that exercise alone is responsible for these changes. The food I eat is a very important part of the progress I’ve made. I am eating cleaner than at any time in my whole life, and that has been critical. But, I want to tell you that strength training is the part of my routine that I LOVE the most. It is the most enjoyable, satisfying, rewarding part of my week.

Lindsay Thurber High School and Can-Pro have teamed up since the inception of our Sports Performance class. Al and his staff have been an integral part of the academic and athletic development of the students.

The Can-Pro experience has reinforced our broad based training theory with instruction on lifting technique coupled with a wide variety of workouts. The staff’s attention to detailed instruction and technical completion is a great benefit to our developing athletes.

Can-Pro’s focus on the development of the total athlete allows our diverse classes of athletes to improve in their chosen sports. Lindsay Thurber has a provincially highly respected Athletic Department that supports 10 different sports throughout the year. Our development of athletes has produced ASAA team and individual Provincial Champions and strong representation across all competitive realms. We have also fostered the development of Canadian National Rugby team member, Gradyn Bowd and Canadian National Women’s Baseball team member, Kelsey Lalor. Graduates of our Sports Performance classes are also competing in USPORTS basketball, volleyball, rugby, cross-country running and track & field. While others are competing in the ACAC in cross-country running, volleyball and basketball. Our access to Can-Pro has been a great asset to our students and graduates as they work to attain their athletic goals.
